The DeKalb County School District partners with Cartwheel to provide virtual mental health and wellness support to middle and high school students, families, and all school staff.
If you're looking for support, choose from the dropdown:

Individual Therapy
Students in middle and high school can meet 1:1 with a licensed therapist.
Parent Guidance
Parents and caregivers with children in middle and high school can meet with a licensed therapist to learn strategies to best support your child’s needs.
Family Therapy
Families can meet with a licensed therapist alongside their child to help improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen relationships.
Psychiatry
Experienced child psychiatrists and nurse practitioners can provide psychiatric evaluation, consultation, and short-term medication management, when needed.
School Avoidance Program
This specialized program combines weekly individual therapy, parent guidance, a consult with a psychiatric provider, and coordinated care to intervene early and help treat the root causes of school avoidance and reduce chronic absenteeism.
Staff Therapy
Any staff member of the DeKalb County School District can meet one-on-one with a licensed clinician via virtual therapy sessions.
Find the right therapist
Virtual therapy allows you to choose from a larger number of therapists and find someone who matches your needs in terms of clinical experience, language, culture, insurance, and more.
More flexible and comfortable
Instead of traveling to an office, kids and parents can join from the comfort of home or even a private space at school, making it easier to consistently attend sessions.
Increased family participation
Family engagement is critical for therapy to be successful, and telehealth allows parents to stay engaged without having to leave home or work.
Meets kids where they are
Kids and teens are digital natives, and many prefer telehealth. Therapists use creative tools like virtual whiteboards to make sessions engaging and dynamic.

We ensure that everyone in the DeKalb County School community can access support, regardless of their insurance coverage. Cartwheel accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicaid.

Cartwheel is a virtual mental health provider and a partner of the DeKalb County School District. Our mission is to be a trusted partner to schools, students, and families. We serve over 325+ school districts across the country by providing students and families with rapid access to care with licensed clinicians. All services are via virtual therapy.
DeKalb’s middle and high school parents, caregivers, guardians, and students (who can legally consent to care) can fill out a simple interest form to request mental health support from Cartwheel.
After you submit the form, your school team will review the request. If the referral is approved, Cartwheel will reach out to you directly—typically within 24–48 hours—to help you get started.
Cartwheel will contact you by text, email, and/or phone, to get you connected to care as quickly as possible. We recommend keeping an eye out for these messages. If you don’t respond right away, they may follow up to make sure you have what you need.
Another option is for a school counselor or social worker to refer a student to Cartwheel. They can do this by getting parental consent and then filling out a form themselves on Cartwheel’s online portal.
Cartwheel maintains same week appointment availability and most families can get scheduled in just a few days. Sign up or contact our office if you have any more specific questions about our clinical team’s availability.
Here's how it typically works:
- After your school approves your referral, Cartwheel reaches out within 24-48 hours
- We help you schedule your first appointment at a time that works best for your family
- First appointments are usually scheduled within 3-7 days
Our virtual model and no-waitlist approach mean your child can start getting support right away.
Parents/guardians of middle or high school students can submit a simple interest form. If a student is 18 or older or otherwise legally authorized, they can also submit an interest form.
Select DeKalb staff members, like a school counselor, social worker, mental health coordinator or nurse, also have the opportunity to refer a student to Cartwheel.
If you’re unsure whether Cartwheel is the right fit for your child, your school’s counseling or support team can help answer questions and guide next steps.
Cartwheel takes your privacy and the security of the information you share with us very seriously. Cartwheel complies with laws that protect patients' health information and the privacy of students' education records, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Once you confirm your child’s participation in Cartwheel’s services, you can decide whether or not you want Cartwheel to share information with your school about your student’s progress in care. If you want a greater level of privacy, you can decline to provide this consent and we will still provide services without sharing any ongoing information with the school.
If you are a DeKalb staff member, like a school counselor, social worker, MTSS Specialist, and mental health coordinator, who has the opportunity to refer a student to Cartwheel, you can submit a referral through the Cartwheel portal at app.cartwheel.org.
Once the referral is approved by your area mental health coordinator, the Cartwheel team will reach out to the student’s parent/guardian (or directly to the student if they are 18 or older or otherwise legally authorized to consent to care) to begin next steps.
Parents and guardians may seek support directly for their middle or high school students here. Submitting this simple interest form notifies the school of the family’s interest. The school team then reviews the request and, if appropriate, approves a referral through district processes before care begins.
Once a referral is approved, Cartwheel will reach out to the family within 24 hours and aim to connect students with a licensed clinician within one week from first contact with the family. This is dependent upon family responsiveness and insurance verification.
Sometimes it can take longer (for example, we need the family’s insurance information in order to confirm coverage). Our care coordinators guide families through the process and facilitate scheduling virtual appointments with us as soon as possible and when convenient for the student and family.
Our office staff is available Mon-Fri 8am to 8pm, and Saturday 8am to 4pm, at 1-617-272-7439 or via email at office@cartwheelcare.org.
Our therapists and psychiatrists provide care before, during, and after school, Mon-Fri from 8am-8pm and Saturdays from 8am-4pm. We are also able to continue care throughout school vacations including summer break.
